Can Cau ethnic market

Visiting Can Cau, I couldn't believe the vibrant colors of head-dresses, blouses, skirts and traditional embroidered costumes. What's more, shoppers are allowed to taste food and fruits before buying them, so many men get too drunk to buy anything! It is an amazing fair.
  • When does Can Cau market open ?

Can Cau is a rural ethnic market, set up simply on the open ground at the side of a mountain, facing a picturesque valley about 20km north of Bac Ha. Every Saturday morning, hundreds of Mong Hoa (Flower Mong) gather to sell their farm products and buy necessities.

The Can Cau market in Si Ma Cai district, northern Vietnam is a traditional market of the ethnic minority people called the Red Mong. The Mong have been living here for several generations and the market itself cater mainly for their needs. This is one of the several ethnic markets in Vietnam with its traditional style, glamour and color. Not as big as the market in Bac Ha, yet Can Cau ethnic fair is well worth a visit for its authenticity and unspoiled atmosphere. This market takes place every Saturday.
